EXPERTS ZERO IN ON SLEEP TO HELP IRAQ VETERANS CONQUER POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS
Dr. Barry Krakow pioneers drug-free technique to help affected American troops regain mental health

Getting a good night's sleep goes a long way toward helping returning American troops deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that can result from time spent in the war zone.

PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms often include sleep problems. Yet directly treating sleep concerns is an aspect of PTSD care that many health professionals have overlooked.

Renowned sleep expert, Dr. Barry Krakow has pioneered a drug-free technique to help Iraq veterans cope with their nightmares, insomnia and other sleep-related problems. Dr. Krakow has outlined these cutting edge treatments in his latest book, "Sound Sleep, Sound Mind: 7 Keys to Sleeping Through the Night".

"This is something that I am very passionate about. It's clear to me and other sleep experts that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder will respond to sleep treatments," says Dr. Krakow. "Psychologists and psychiatrists who treat people with PTSD are not picking up on the sleep angle and how powerful sleep treatments might be for their patients. Fix their sleep problems and their mental health is going to improve."

Dr. Krakow will discuss his findings and approaches during a Witness Justice seminar on Wednesday, May 7 at 1:30 p.m.. Witness Justice is an advocacy group focused on helping survivors or violence, disaster or trauma. Dr. Krakow's presentation is entitled, "PTSD  & Sleep Disorders: The Benefits of Sleep Medical Care for the Trauma Survivor".

Dr. Barry Krakow is a Silver Spring native. He is Medical Director for Maimonides Sleep Arts & Sciences and founder of both the Nightmare Treatment Center                                   (www.nightmaretreatment.com) and www.sleeptreatment.com. In addition, Dr. Krakow's works have been published in numerous medical, psychiatric and sleep journals. Dr. Krakow has also appeared on ABC's 20/20, CBS's Sunday Morning and CBS's Early Morning shows.
