- Why is the book titled Sound Sleep, Sound Mind?
When a person improves their sleep, there's every reason to believe it will also improve their mental heath. Most people think it's the other way round. When you fix your mental health problems, you'll sleep better. I wanted to make clear in my title that you can strengthen your mind with better sleep.
- How long did it take to write the book?
I started writing the book in 1999, obtained a contract for the work in 2003 from the publisher John Wiley & Sons, and finished it 2007. The biggest and best reason it took so long was that I was also spending a great deal of time opening Maimonides Sleep Arts & Sciences, our new sleep center in Albuquerque.
- Where can I go to see or skim through the book?
The book is available wherever books are sold. And you can "See Inside" the book to view the table of contents, the flap information, and some excerpts.
- Is Sound Sound useful for any type of insomniac?
I believe Sound Sleep is invaluable to virtually any type of insomniac because it provides a series of steps and a sleeping bag full of tools and techniques you need to overcome your sleeplessness.
- What about insomniacs who use sleeping pills?
It's ideal for this type of patient, because it not only shows you how to sleep drug-free, but there are several sections that clearly explain the best ways to eliminate sleep medications in safe and efficient ways.
- What about sleep
Apnea patients, can the book help them?
We've been told that the book is serving as an incredible introduction to the sleep lab experience as well as to the use of CPAP treatment for sleep apnea. We're pleased to hear this feeback, because our approach to treating sleep apnea is very innovative, partly because we work with many complex patients who, for example, suffer from sleep apnea and insomnia.
- Did you really personally test every technique in the book?
Yes, I have used and continue to use all the insomnia techniques including learning how to balance thoughts and feelings, imagery skills, and emotional processing techniques. I also use bilevel PAP therapy and previously used a dental device for my sleep apnea. The only exception is that I've never needed medications for sleep, although I do use iron supplements from time to time to reduce a mild case of Restless Legs Syndrome.
- If I were going to buy one book to help me sleep, why would it be Sound Sleep, Sound Mind?
Because this book, like no other before it, delves into areas of psychology and physiology that explain sleep problems in a unique mind-body perspective. This holistic approach makes it very clear that the potential to cure your sleep problems is more real than the most vivid dream you can imagine.
- So, this book will actually cure my sleep problems?
The book won't cure you, but it will teach you how to cure yourself, because it provides you with the knowledge and tools you need to comprehensively treat and in many cases completely solve your sleep problems.
- Once I start in with the book, how long will it take to see results?
Most people see results immediately, because the new "sleep quality" model rapidly transforms troubled sleepers' views of their own sleep problems. They become ready to tackle their sleep difficulties with confidence, comfort and peace of mind. Even more importantly, the book is written in a way where you can expect to see progress every step of the way.
