Moving Forward
Even if you persuade a "Show Me" sleep patient to move forward, the individual’s motivation begins as a desire to improve things for the satisfaction of someone else--you! But because there is little “internal” drive to solve the problem, the motivation is usually short-term. Just think about how little you accomplish in your own life when you are repeatedly told to do something instead of developing an internal desire to accomplish it because it's an established personal goal. While initial motivation in Show Me patients may spark action, it rarely lasts. Therefore, in trying to help this "closet" sleep patient, there are usually only two scenarios that seem to produce genuine results:
